The MACBA Collection increases with the generous donation of the art collector Patricia Phelps de Cisneros of the work Piano (2007) by the Brazilian artist Waltercio Caldas (Rio de Janeiro, 1946).

The work is framed in Caldas’ own style of creating objects and sculptures, as per the materials, dimensions and form. Indeed, Piano follows the Neo-concrete aesthetic, which prevails in his work. The artistic movement developed during the 60s in Rio de Janeiro among artists like Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica which promoted a non-figurative art that could create multisensorial spaces with the audience.

Waltercio Caldas began displaying his work in 1960 in Rio de Janeiro; since then he has exhibited in several Brazilian galleries and museums, such as important ones like the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes and the Centro Cultural Light in Rio de Janeiro or the Museu de Arte Moderna in Salvador. Furthermore, he represented Brazil at the São Paulo Biennial in 1996 and at the Venice Biennale in 1997.
